The Australian Society of Orthodontists and the American Association of Orthodontists both recommend that children have their first orthodontic assessment around age seven or eight.
Why so early? During the pre-adolescent years, a child’s jaws are growing at their fastest rate. This stage of development offers a valuable window of opportunity to detect and manage issues related to jaw growth, bite alignment, or tooth eruption before they become more complicated.
If no treatment is needed at this early stage, the orthodontist can simply monitor your child’s development and recommend the ideal time to return—if treatment is required at all.
Early assessment doesn’t always mean early treatment, but it allows orthodontists to intervene at the right time and achieve the best long-term results.
