Invisalign faqs

Many of our patients have questions regarding the Invisalign product and the Invisalign treatment process. Some questions come up more often than others. Here are the answers to the questions we most frequently come across.

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is an orthodontic treatment technology that allows you to straighten your teeth without braces. Instead of braces, the Invisalign treatment process uses a series of clear, removable aligners that gradually straighten your teeth.

Invisalign aligners are a registered medical device, you should always read and follow the label as well as the instructions of your treating orthodontist.

Does Invisalign work as well as normal braces?

Not all orthodontic cases will qualify for treatment with Invisalign. However, for those patients who qualify for Invisalign treatment, Invisalign can be just as effective as traditional braces. It is crucial that you work with an orthodontist who is extremely familiar with Invisalign, like the members of The Invisible Orthodontist group. These orthodontists are able to treat a broader range of cases using the Invisalign treatment process.

Are all Invisalign doctors the same?

It is important to understand that not all orthodontists are the same, and Invisalign orthodontists are no exception to this rule. General dentists and professional orthodontists are able to provide Invisalign treatment. However, only qualified orthodontists have completed specialist training in the area of orthodontics. As a result, these professionals are better suited to provide you with the results you need using the Invisalign treatment process.

What are the primary benefits of Invisalign?

There are a number of benefits that Invisalign offers. These benefits include the fact that Invisalign is nearly invisible, allowing you to straighten your teeth while maintaining self-confidence. Invisalign aligners are also removable, allowing you to take the aligners out for special occasions and to allow you better oral hygiene. Invisalign is also more comfortable than traditional braces since there are no metal brackets or wires to irritate your mouth.

What are Invisalign aligners made of?

The aligners used in the Invisalign treatment process are made of clear, strong, medical-grade non-toxic plastic that is virtually invisible.

How does Invisalign effectively move teeth?

The Invisalign aligners work very much like brackets and archwires. The aligners move your teeth using gentle force. However, in addition to controlling the timing of the force application, the aligners also control the movement of specific teeth depending on the specific aligner being used. Instead of going in for adjustments, as you would with traditional braces, you simply change your aligner to the next aligner in the set approximately every two weeks.

Can I go to any orthodontist or dentist to be treated with Invisalign?

An orthodontist must undergo special training prior to treating patients with Invisalign treatment. Dr. Harris has specialized in training using the Invisalign technology and is a member of the elite orthodontist group referred to as The Invisible Orthodontist.

How much does Invisalign cost?

The cost of Invisalign will vary depending on your specific treatment needs. The costs of treatment will be discussed with you during your initial consultation, along with our available payment options. The cost of treatment is usually similar to or slightly higher than the cost of treatment with adult ceramic braces.

Will wearing the aligners affect my speech?

Like all orthodontic treatments, aligners may temporarily affect your speech. You may experience a slight lisp for a day or two. However, as your tongue gets used to having the aligners in your mouth, any lisp or minor speech impediment that has been caused by the aligners should disappear completely.

How often must I wear the aligners?

The Invisalign aligners should be worn all day, except when eating, brushing and flossing. The more you wear the aligners, the shorter your treatment period will be.

Can I drink with aligners still on?

You should remove your aligners to drink anything except water. Leaving aligners on while drinking may stain the aligners and may also increase the risk of tooth decay.

Will smoking stain the aligners?

We discourage smoking while wearing aligners because it is possible for the aligners tobecome discoloured.

Can I chew gum while wearing aligners?

No, gum will stick to the aligners. We recommend removing your aligners for all meals and snacks.

What's the best way to clean my aligners?

The best way to clean your aligners is by brushing them with toothpaste and rinsing them in cold water.
